What we do
Our flagship program trains humanists to help alleviate loneliness and isolation in the community through an innovative companioning model.
We have a particular focus on ceremonies especially end of life, with non-religious celebrant listings and links to independent organisations working in end-of-life care including VAD and grief support.
Our History
The Humanist Society of Victoria was founded in 1961 by a group of freethinkers who believed people could live ethical and meaningful lives guided by reason, compassion and shared human values rather than religious doctrine. Emerging from traditions associated with the Rationalist and Unitarian movements, the Society brought together individuals committed to human rights, secular education and social progress.
Over the decades, members have contributed to public debates on issues such as civil liberties, ethical decision-making, bioethics, equality, voluntary euthanasia, and the role of religion in public life. Through public lectures, advocacy and community building, the Humanist Society of Victoria has maintained a consistent focus on helping create a civil society in which people can lead fulfilling lives grounded in human responsibility and evidence-based thinking.
