Humanist Companioning

Humanist Companioning provides one-to-one social and emotional support for people who may be experiencing loneliness, isolation, grief or significant life changes.

We welcome enquiries and referrals from individuals, families and organisations looking for non-religious companioning support.

We are currently recruiting volunteers. Our in-person visiting program is Melbourne-based but we also sometimes have telephone or online pastoral care opportunities.

Humanist Companioning brings people together to reduce loneliness and isolation through meaningful human connection.

Volunteers are trained, vetted and supported to offer a helping hand and a listening ear for those who need it.

We welcome referrals from individuals, families and organisations, and we are also recruiting non-religious volunteers in and around Melbourne. Telephone and online companioning may also be available.

What Humanist Companioning Involves

Our Humanist Companioning Program is all about humanism in action. Companions provide non-judgemental presence and support to people who simply need someone by their side. You may be placed in aged care settings, private homes (as part of a team), or offering phone, text or online support. Some companions assist people at the end of life — including those choosing voluntary assisted dying — or offer comfort through times of grief and change.

The people you companion will come from all walks of life — different ages, genders, cultures, religions and backgrounds — but what they have in common is the need for respectful, compassionate human connection.

Who Can Volunteer and How It Works

Humanist companions are trained and police-checked. We welcome applications from people who identify as humanist or have no religious beliefs. You don’t need prior experience — just empathy, openness and reliability.

In the application form, you’ll be asked to share why you’re interested and which settings or situations you feel most comfortable with. This helps us make placements that feel right for everyone — including you.

Become a Humanist Companion and offer presence, connection and compassion to those who need it most. You’ll be supported with training, guidance and a community of like-minded volunteers.
