Humanists International has released a new global position statement responding to what it describes as a deeply concerning moment for democracy, pluralism and universal human rights worldwide.
Titled “The Global Challenge to Liberal Democracy, Pluralism, and Universal Human Rights”, the statement addresses increasingly visible patterns of rising authoritarianism, the spread of deliberate misinformation, shrinking civic space, and growing disregard for the inherent dignity and rights of individuals and communities across many countries.
Since its founding in 1952 where the fundamentals of “modern, ethical Humanism” were established in a global congress of humanist organisations, Humanists International has worked to defend the institutions and protections that advocate for freedom, equality and human rights worldwide. This new statement reflects concerns that have been raised repeatedly across the global humanist movement and sets out a shared call for vigilance, solidarity and action.
The statement urges governments, international organisations and civil society to actively defend democratic principles, uphold universal human rights, and protect genuine pluralism in public life.
Humanists Victoria welcomes this clear and timely articulation of shared humanist values and encourages members to read the full statement to consider how we can continue to support global efforts to defend democracy, pluralism and human rights.
