Mubarak Bala arrives in Germany

Mubarak Bala Begins New Chapter in Germany After Years of Detention

Nigerian humanist Mubarak Bala, former President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, has arrived safely in Germany to begin a six-month residency under the Humanist Shelter Programme, hosted by Humanistische Vereinigung and supported by the Elisabeth Selbert Initiative. His arrival on 28 April 2025 marks five years since he was first detained—a detention later condemned as arbitrary by the United Nations.

The programme offers Bala a much-needed opportunity to recover from the trauma of his imprisonment, rebuild his life, and continue his human rights work in a safe environment. Michael Bauer, chair of Humanistische Vereinigung, expressed gratitude to the many organisations and individuals involved, particularly the German government and Frank Schwabe, the Federal Commissioner for Freedom of Religion or Belief, for their decisive role in securing Bala’s release.

Reflecting on his newfound freedom, Bala spoke movingly about the support he received from people of all faiths and none across the globe. He thanked Humanists International, its member organisations, and countless individuals for their tireless advocacy and solidarity. Bala plans to use his time in Germany to undergo medical treatment, further his education, and prepare for a return to Nigeria—where he hopes to help shape a more tolerant and open society.
